A “seismic event” sparked the rock fall, at the BHP Nickel West Perseverance mine at Leinster, 370km north of Kalgoorlie, about 2.30pm (WST) on Wednesday, a BHP Billiton spokeswoman said in a statement.

“One employee remains underground in a purpose-built safety refuge station,” the spokeswoman said.

“The safety refuge chamber is located approximately 100 metres from where the fall occurred.

“The employee is safe and has access to provisions of water, clean air, bathroom facilities and a phone to the mine at the surface.”

The trapped man can stand and move around in the eight-man refuge chamber, which has lighting and is similar in design to crib rooms used as staff rooms by miners underground, the spokeswoman said.

All other employees and contractors are safe and have been accounted for.

Rescue crews are at the scene and are in regular contact with the trapped man and are working to clear and secure access to the refuge chamber, an operation that “could take some time”, the spokeswoman said.

Mine operations have been suspended.

“Our immediate concern is for the health and safety of the affected employee and that his family has peace of mind and confidence in the mine rescue process,” she said.

“We are working to ensure his return to the surface as quickly as possible with his safety as the primary priority.”

The nickel mine at Leinster produces 35,000 to 40,000 tonnes of nickel in concentrate a year, according to BHP Billiton figures.

The mine is part of a system of nickel mines, concentrators, smelters and a refinery spread across southern WA.

BHP Billiton’s Nickel West operations employ about 3,600 people.

It is the third largest producer of nickel concentrate in the world, supplying about 16 per cent of global nickel demand.

It exported US$3.6 billion worth of nickel in the 2006/07 financial year.
