Peter Andre to join This Morning

Thursday, August 27th, 2009

Peter Andre is to join ITV’s flagship daytime programme This Morning as a showbusiness reporter, the broadcaster has confirmed.

The singer, who is in the midst of an acrimonious split from his wife Katie Price, will form part of the show’s revamped line-up from September.

Other newcomers include Changing Rooms host Linda Barker, chef Jean Christophe Novelli and gardener Diarmuid Gavin.

The long-running magazine show returns on 1 September.

Stand-in presenters Eamonn Holmes and his fiance and Ruth Langsford will take the reins for the first two weeks, before Philip Schofield returns with his new sidekick, Holly Willoughby.

The 28-year-old Xtra Factor host was appointed as a replacement for Fern Britton earlier this year, and said she would try to bring her own style to the show.

“You can’t try to recreate anything that’s been in the past,” she told Hello! magazine.

“Fern and Phil were a brilliant couple. They were hilarious and you couldn’t help but laugh along with them.”

Willoughby has had time to grow accustomed to new daytime Schofield, having co-hosted celebrity contest Dancing On Ice with him for three years.

The 21st anniversary of This Morning will be marked in October with on-screen celebrations and surprise guests, ITV said.

Tour de LeBron comes through Akron

Monday, August 24th, 2009

The U.S. Olympic teammates and close friends rode through the city’s streets Saturday as James hosted his annual “King for Kids” charity bike-a-thon. James and Paul pushed the pace in the lead group of bicyclists, pedaling past James’ former high school St. Vincent-St. Mary and the city’s zoo on the 8-mile route.

James, of course, was the first to cross the finish line.

The Cavaliers’ superstar was joined by TV host Nick Cannon, Cleveland coach Mike Brown and Cavs general manager Danny Ferry.
The event ended a busy three days in Akron for James, who screened a new documentary, “More Than A Game,” the story of how he and four childhood friends from the inner city achieved their dream of winning a high school national championship. James was scheduled to travel to China on Saturday to promote the film, which will open in the U.S. in October.

On Friday, James made sure he watched his beloved Dallas Cowboys, who opened their new $1.2 billion stadium with a 30-10 win over Tennessee.

“They looked great and that place is awesome, but they better raise that Jumbotron,” said James, referring to Tennessee rookie punter A.J. Trapasso’s kick that hit the bottom of the massive video boards over the field. “I think he might have tried to do that on purpose, you know, be the first one.”

James is excited about seeing Dallas’ pigskin palace and will get a chance when it hosts the NBA All-Star game in February.

Along with Paul and others, James spent much of the weekend with Darrius Snow, a 19-year-old from Atlanta who was rewarded by Nickelodeon for helping kids in his crime-infested neighborhood with a surprise trip to Ohio to be a guest of James.

Snow was abandoned by his mother when he was 2 years old. However, he became the first in his family to graduate high school and will attend Voorhees College in the fall.

Snow, who was overwhelmed by the weekend’s activities, was also given a scholarship as part of the TeenNick HALO Awards, a show produced by Cannon which will premiere in December.

“There are so many people in our communities that are making this world a better place and never get the recognition—a lot of young people,” Cannon said. “I wanted to highlight all the teens who are making a difference in their community, the everyday people who are making this world tick and go around.

“It’s people like Darrius who have truly inspired people, and their stories need to be told. Not only have these people overcome their own obstacles, but they’ve turned around and given back to make things easier for others.”

Jackson not ready for extinction

Monday, August 24th, 2009

EARTH CITY, Mo. – Through the eyes of an era he grew up watching, Steven Jackson looks at his profession and sees something perverse. The St. Louis Rams running back watches NFL highlights on his flat screen television, and he’s transfixed in horror: 5-foot-8 backs, third-down specialists, goal-line platooning. And worst of all, running back rotations.
He shakes his head. Where did three-down backs like Walter Payton go? What happened to tall, big, fast athletes like Bo Jackson? When did it become treasonous to let a running back touch the football 25 to 30 times a game? (more…)

UK film board stops sale of Japanese horror movie

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Britain’s film board banned the sale of a Japanese horror DVD, saying Wednesday its violence is so extreme that it could cause psychological harm to audiences. The film “Grotesque” devoted most of its running time to the sexual assault and torture of its two main characters, the British Board of Film Classification said.”‘Grotesque’ features minimal narrative or character development and presents the audience with little more than an unrelenting and escalating scenario of humiliation, brutality and sadism,” the board said in a statement. The board has refused to classify the film, meaning it cannot be legally sold or supplied anywhere in Britain. The board said the movie’s nonstop scenes of torture — including amputation, eye-gouging, castration and evisceration — make it impossible to edit the film in a way which would make it acceptable for British viewers. The board, which rates about 10,000 films for DVD release each year, said the ban was “very rare.” The last movie turned down by the board was 2004 film “Murder-Set-Pieces,” which was rejected in early 2008. In 2005, it refused “Terrorists, Killers And Other Wackos” — a film that carried clips of real torture and execution.
